  • Porsche 911 RS Touring for sale

This is an extraordinary example of possibly the most sought-after Porsche of all time - the 1973 911 RS Touring.

After Porsche retired its Le Mans-winning Type 917 Prototype program in the early 1970s, the FIA introduced a new series for production based sports cars - Group 4 - and Porsche rose to the challenge with the 911 RS. Two versions were produced - the Lightweight for competition use and Touring for road use. The FIA rules meant that a certain quantity of the 'Touring' version had to made and sold for the 'Lightweight' to qualify for competition.

The RS Touring weighs 1075 kg (2370 lb) with the Lightweight saving around 100 kg by the use of thinner gauge steel for the body shell and also thinner glass. RS stands for Rennsport ('Race Sport')  and compared with a standard 911 S 2.4, the Carrera 2.7 RS had a larger engine developing 210 bhp with mechanical fuel injection, revised, stiffened suspension, the “ducktail” rear spoiler, larger brakes, and wider rear wheels.

Internally, there was some doubt that the run of 500 would sell, but when the Carrera RS made its public debut at the 1972 Paris Auto Show orders came thick and fast - selling out the first 500, then a second series and then a third. In all 1580 were produced.

This original, matching numbers UK right-hand-drive example was supplied by Hexagon of Highgate and was fully restored by Paragon in 2013.

Presented in Jet Black with black sport seats with headrests, it features the 2.7 litre flat six air-cooled engine developing 210 bhp, 15" Fuchs wheels, a toolkit & spare wheel, drivers door mirror, a Becker Mexico radio cassette, electric sunroof, red Carrera decals, electric windows and a heated rear window.

This represents a rare fine opportunity to own a landmark piece of Porsche history - considered by many to be the greatest classic 911 of all-time. Complete with letter of origin from Porsche.
